THE JOURNEY OF SELF-AWARENESS
Coaching facilitates the process of growth and development by working through honest self-awareness, self-assessment, self-motivation and self-regulation. The journey to accurate self-awareness and honest self-assessment can be deeply challenging. Our coaches therefore strive to assist and guide our clients as they embark on this intense journey to ‘self’ by creating a nurturing and non-judgemental environment.
As challenging as undergoing coaching may be, it is equally as rewarding and empowers our clients with the choice to change their way of thinking and attain their full potential, after all, mastering yourself is true power.
HOW IS COACHING DIFFERENT TO PSYCHOTHERAPY?
It is important to note that coaching is a development tool and differs from therapy. Therapy deals with past issues and traumas, the intention being to interrogate and resolve past events and lead a patient back to a level of wholeness. Coaching takes the client along a positive and impactful journey from their current place of being ‘stuck’ to realising their potential using a variety of methodologies.
Neuro-coaching is a partnership between the coach and client in which the coach becomes what is referred to as the client’s ‘thought, challenge and accountability partner’. As such, by equipping a client with the necessary techniques and tools, a coach aims to assist and guide the client in their journey to self awareness and development in which the client confronts their challenges and forms their own solutions. The role of a coach is not to counsel the client or prescribe actions to be taken by the client.
Mindfulness coaching
Mindfulness is an awareness of your present experience or what most of us more commonly known as “living in the moment” in which we give 100% of our attention to what we are doing. This gives purpose to the present moment instead of focusing on the past or worrying about the future.
Through training, we assist our clients in focusing their attention and awareness in the present moment, acknowledging and managing their thoughts, feelings and body sensations without judging or being critical of themselves. This enables clients to identify stress and triggers that evoke an emotional or physical reaction within them.
When clients are aware of their stressors, they are better able to anticipate them and hit the “pause button” when stress and triggers arise, assessing the situation in which they find themselves and formulating an appropriate response instead of reverting to an emotional or physical reaction.
THE “BEST” APPROACH
While guiding our clients through mindfulness coaching, the four areas that our coaches will concentrate on with regards to creating self-awareness are BEST:
- Body
- Emotions
- Senses
- Thoughts
SEVEN BENEFITS OF PRACTICING MINDFULNESS DAILY
Practicing mindfulness in our daily lives is a powerful tool and is shown to have the following benefits:
- Coping with stress – The world over, we all find ourselves living in a highly stressful environment dealing with challenges such as the global economy, job security, poverty and climate change.Closer to home, we carry the burden of daily stressors such as our commute to the office, work and family commitments and financial concerns. These stressors can leave us feeling mentally and physically exhausted at the end of our day. While we may not be able to change or limit these stressors, practicing mindfulness can help us to remain calm and cope better with stress. As we become more agile to our changing environment and begin to handle short and long term stress more effectively, so too will our experience of stress diminish.
- Reducing conflict, worry and anxiety – Mindfulness equips us with the ability to become aware of our thoughts and emotions without reacting to them. By not immediately reacting to our stressors and triggers, we can lessen our feelings of anger and take control of our temper to reduce conflict. As mindfulness teaches us to align our thinking, feeling and action centres, we tend not to over-think or over-analyse a situation or set of circumstances, which in turn reduces our experience of anxiety and excessive worry.
- Setting boundaries and saying “no” – Many of us find it difficult to say “no” to others, even though we may be agreeing to something that does not serve us and is not in our best interest. The reason that we give in and acquiesce to others’ requests is because saying “no” can make us feel uncomfortable – an emotion that we generally tend to avoid. When we approach these awkward situations from a mindful perspective, we are more aware of our uncomfortable emotions and are better able to tolerate them instead of reacting to them and giving in.
- Increasing focus and concentration – In the hustle and bustle of today’s world, maintaining focus and concentration can be easier said than done and many of us tend to procrastinate or lose sight of our goals.Staying present and mindful can equip us with the powerful ability to control and direct our attention with purpose. By practicing mindfulness, we can learn to maintain concentration and remain focused on our priorities.
- Increasing commitment – Practicing mindfulness equips us with a greater sense of autonomy and the ability to effectively set and achieve our goals. Achieving our goals also becomes more attainable due to the benefits of reduced anxiety and stress.
- Improving listening capabilities and communication – Effective communication is a key skill and being able to actively listen to others is a vital part of building positive relationships and communicating well with people.Practicing mindfulness teaches us to consciously observe and describe our interaction with someone, thereby becoming a better listener. We gain a better understanding of what is being said by carefully observing the conversation and articulating these observations as opposed to listening superficially.
- Taking greater care of ourselves – Being mindful means being aware of your thoughts, emotions and body sensations at any given time. As we become more mindful, we find it easier to handle physical and emotional difficulties and challenges when they arise. As we learn to no longer instinctively react emotionally or physically to stress and triggers, we experience a sustainable decrease in our physical and psychological symptoms. We can improve our mood, self-esteem, confidence and quality of life, thereby experiencing greater zest and enthusiasm for life.
Mindfulness is about focusing your attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment and with the absence of judgement

Neuro-coaching
Neuroscience is the study of the brain and nervous system. By way of individual nerve cells or neurons firing up a vast network of interlinking circuits throughout our nervous system, the brain is responsible for our thoughts, emotions, mood and intelligence, as well as our physical movement, heart rate, breathing and sleep.
Our brain essentially makes us who we are and facilitates almost every aspect of what it means for us to be alive.
THE STUDY OF NEUROSCIENCE
Through the study of neuroscience we can gain a deeper understanding of how our brain affects our cognitive functions, reasoning, attention, language, memory, responses, behavioural functions and social interaction.
Building on this methodology, neurocoaching equips our clients with the ability to understand their neurological design, as well as what drives and motivates their thoughts and behaviour. Thereafter, clients are enabled with the power of choice to change, reframe and re-programme their thought patterns, social awareness and relationship management.
HOW DO MY CLIENTS BENEFIT?
Today we find ourselves living and working in what is referred to as a VUCA World:
V – Volatile
U – Uncertain
C – Complex
A – Ambiguous
In order to not only survive but thrive amid these challenges, our neurocoaching methodology aims to equip our clients with the necessary tools and techniques required to transform themselves, becoming adaptable and better able to manage challenges.
We refer to this as ‘Change Fit’ enabling our clients to out-learn, out-think, out-create and out-perform their competition.
The journey to personal mastery
Personal mastery is about fully understanding yourself, how you think, why you do things the way you do and having clarity around your purpose and direction in life. This can be a lifelong journey, taking steps towards continuously learning and evolving to develop and enhance oneself, broadening your outlook and seeing life from renewed perspectives.
THE PRINCIPLE OF PERSONAL MASTERY
Our journey to personal mastery is guided by principles such as purpose, vision, belief, commitment and knowing oneself. Personal mastery is not something that is achieved overnight, but rather something that each and every one of us can strive towards in our journey of life, creating a satisfying, successful, happy and fulfilling existence.
The principle of personal mastery underlies the coaching methodologies used by our coaches. In partnership with the client, our coaches will guide individuals and teams as they embark upon this journey, equipping them with practical tools and techniques that can easily be applied.
SIX WAYS THAT WE CAN IMPROVE UPON PERSONAL MASTERY
- Emotional intelligence – Exercising emotional intelligence means understanding your personality, your beliefs and values, why you do things the way you do and why you make certain choices and decisions in your life. It also includes knowing your motivators and triggers as well as your strengths and areas that you could work on and develop.Emotional intelligence speaks to the mindfulness ability to think about thinking and ultimately help you shape the way you want to move forward on your journey towards personal mastery.
- Personal vision and purpose – Personal mastery encompasses living a life with purpose and meaning. What meaning do you give to your emotions? What responses will you choose that will serve others and yourself? Knowing your purpose will empower you to achieve your true potential.
- Positive attitude – Having the right mental attitude enables you to make the right decisions and take action in your life. It is about seeing the best in yourself, in others and the world in general. Personal mastery assists you in converting negative energy into positive energy, shaping your thoughts and thinking positively and powerfully.
- Balance in life – Realising personal mastery allows you to become more mindful of how you are spending your time and energy, helping you to make better decisions to ensure that you are experiencing everything that is important to you, thereby balancing your life more effectively.
- Mindfulness – Mindfulness is about paying 100% attention to whatever you are doing in the present moment. This gives purpose to your experience of the present instead of focusing on the past or worrying about the future.
- Achieving Success – Behaving within the principles of personal mastery, you will understand yourself, know what your purpose is, think positively and utilise your talents, skills and strengths. This in turn positions you on the path to success in respect of goals and endeavors you choose to pursue.
Ultimately, personal mastery is about creating your own life and fulfilling your own destiny. You are in the driver’s seat and you have the power to navigate your life’s journey.
Health and wellness coaching
Health and wellness coaching is a blended form of coaching that incorporates coaching and mentoring to inspire and assist coachees in reaching their health and wellness goals.
Health coaching incorporates mentoring, something that is not usually present in traditional life coaching because the Health Coach has specialist knowledge in the specific area in which the coachee wants to improve (e.g. health and nutrition).
Health coaching helps clients to create a new and exciting lifestyle and enjoy an improved attitude to health. Clients approach health coaches when their health is deteriorating – when they feel exhausted, are gaining weight and finding it harder to lose, are going through menopause, experiencing hypertension, poor sleep, low mood or are pre-diabetic… the list goes on.
THE AIM OF HEALTH COACHING
The aim of health coaching is to:
- Create a new lifestyle that addresses the health issues that are affecting the enjoyment of clients’ lives.
- Create an exciting change process built around an ideal wellness vision which includes mindfulness and resilience building.
In 2019, the World Health Organisation listed non-communicable diseases (e.g. cancer, respiratory disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease) as one of the top 10 threats to global health. These diseases:
- Collectively cause over 70% of deaths worldwide (41 million deaths);
- Result in 15 million premature deaths* (between ages 30-69); and
- Are driven by five major risk factors: physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, excessive alcohol use, tobacco use, and air pollution.
*More than 85% of premature deaths related to non-communicable diseases occur in low- to middle-income countries.
Besides the current health and wellness challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a worldwide health crisis. For the first time in history, there are more obese and overweight people than underweight people (with a total of 1.9 billion overweight adults, and 650 million obese adults worldwide). Despite the medical profession’s efforts and modern drug treatment options, greater numbers of people are experiencing ill health.
One cannot ignore mental health and wellbeing. Health and wellness coaching addresses issues causing stress and assists clients to build resilience through practical tools and techniques that are mindfully incorporated into everyday life.
Health coaching works on prevention, ideally working with people before they become one of the above statistics. The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) target set in 2011 is to reduce preventable deaths by 25% by 2025. We believe that health coaching is a key component in reaching this target.
